“What’s the one thing besides pretty girls that you always see in a music video? If your saying liquor or fancy clothes with the label blurred out of them, then I’ll give partial credit because you were trying, but what I am talking about is cars. Yes, you see the artist rapping in front of them, in them or even on top of them as they’re going 5 MPH, but in this new version of power rankings, I look at some of the best hip hop videos with the best vehicles in them, so buckle up.” – Badnews
5. Ludacris- Act A Fool: In this colorful video that looks like it was shot in Miami and I’m just guessing because the actual movie was shot in Miami. Besides the appearances from the cast of the movie such as Paul Walker, Eva Mendez and Devon Aoki, the best cameo came the one and only Tyrese Gibson aka Roman Pierce Besides the police chases and Luda hanging out the passenger side of the window rapping the second verse as the driver did donuts, which probably made the insurance company cringe and have mild heart attacks, this music video has the right mix of women, actor cameos, chases and chromed out-ness. To me this video is a classic among all hip hop car heads and it really gets you hyped up just enough to motivate you to get in your car, no matter the make or model, just to race down the highway. But please don’t do it for real…
4. Dorrough- Ice Cream Paint Job: Now it was a toss up to include this video or to include Mike Jones’s Still Tippin’ featuring Slim Thug who is getting head while driving a 2002 Escalade andPaul Wall grinning showing off his diamond grill while a convoy of old school Cadillac El Dorado’s, “swang” in the lanes, but because of the ending of Dorrough’s music video, Still Tippin’ gets the honorable mention. Dorrough’s break out single Ice Cream Paint Job starts off with a guy hopping out of a silver whip with blue flamed candy painted Cutlass in which keys are tossed to the valet but mysteriously Dorrough just hops in the car and starts it… but how? I didn’t see him get the keys from the other valet. Anyway, Dorrough is cruising through the mean streets of Dallas, and by “mean” I mean, it seems like there is always a sexy chick crossing the road, walking down the street waving or waiting at a bus stop. What separates this video from all the other southern hip hop car heavy videos is not the cameos by Slim Thug, Soulja Boy, Chamillionaire, Bun B and Lil’ Boosie, but the actual 97.9 The Beat car show in which a mass amount of dope whips are displayed. Yeah Buddy…
3. Cam’Ron- Killa Cam: Possibly the most famous SUV in hip hop history made its debut in Cam’Ron’s first single off his Purple Haze album. You know how everybody is making a big fuss over skinny jeans? Well, several years ago, believe it or not, It was okay to wear pink thanks to Cam’Ron and the Pink Panther craze was evident during this time period. And since Cam’Ron was balling out of control, why not drive a Pink 2004 Range Rover with a Pink Leather and velvet interior to match his pink outfits. Now this short scene was sampled from Coming to America with two ladies throwing rose pedals at the ground. But why did they do that? He wasn’t going to get lost from the curb to the door of his car. But I get it, it was symbolizing royalty. Now the last time I checked, Cam’ Ron no longer owns the Range Rover. He sold it on ebay. But whoever has it, probably knows that they now own a piece of Diplomat history. And for all the Denver readers out there, you all know that LaLa Vasquez aka Carmelo Anthony’s woman rocks a metallic pink Range Rover she use to have that would have made Cam’s truck look more beautiful… only if you placed the two cars together.
2. Birdman Feat. Rick Ross, Young Jeezy and Lil’ Wayne- $100 Million: Where do I begin? The video starts off at a swamp where Rick Ross and The Triple C’s henchmen are on a boat, Birdman arrives in a helicopter and DJ Khaled arrives in a Maybach (which has no business in a swamp) followed by a row of Cadillac Escalades. Obviously someone is about to get paid because as you arrive to the hook, you see super producers Cool & Dre singing in front of a huge pick-up truck with a big bags full of money with the Birdman logo on them in the bed of the truck. Now, we are at the scene with what looks like a factory of women counting a whole bunch of money and Birdman smoking a cigar. Possibly the most epic scene in hip hop music video history pauses the whole song as white doves fly away from Birdman in a John Woo-like slow motion scene from Mission Impossible 2. This video makes the list because of the display and mixture of fine luxury cars such as the Mercedes SLK and the Red Bentley GT, Red Porsche Boxster,Red Impala and Cutlass. It’s also not a bad song either.
1. Dr. Dre- Let Me Ride: A classic hip hip video. This project had everything from Dr. Dre rolling down the streets of South Central in a black 1964 Impala picking up a girl sucking on a pop-sicle from a bus stop to arriving at a car wash where there are other low riders bouncing around and there is even a car jacking! This video had everything and anything to to with cars and the LA car culture during the 90’s. Also with cameos from Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg and Lady of Rage hittin’ switches not only made for a great car video but also showed Death Row Records at it’s peak with The Chronic album before 2Pac made it what it once was.
(Honorable Mention) G-Unit – Stunt 101: When you come into a lot of money like 50 Cent first did, the first thing you would buy is a car. A little known fact that the very first car he ever bought in real life was the exact same Mercedes that his character Caesar bought in the movie Get Rich or die Tryin’. For he first G-Unit music video ever, it contained a sample from the movie Gone In 60 Seconds but the main scene that helped make the list was 50 casually walking into a dealership asking R&B singer Brandy if he could take a Porsche “for a spin”. Watch the video and you will see what happens.
(Honorable Mention) E-40 Feat. Keek Da Sneak: This video takes me back to when I had my 2000 Buick Century and almost crashed my car into a pole trying to imitate this video. So please just watch the video and don’t do. In 2006 the Hyphy movement was born and with it Ghost Riding was introduced; Another gift to us from The Bay. The video was the last time E-40 cut his hair and started to grow dreads. It also introduced us to stunna shades and the rocking back and forth of one’s head, while trying to not snap that neck. This video also gave us another insane way to show off our cars and driving skills… just give the car a little gas, put it in neutral and then hop out and start going hyphy. It spawned funny youtube clips as well as a Mainstram hit for E-40 for the first time in years. Even though ghostriding isn’t as popular as it was a few years ago, trust me there are people out there that still go dumb and ghost-ride the whip.
