SupeStar JayDubbed a “legend in the making” by SOHH.com, DJ Superstar Jay is heavily regarded as one of the best, if not the best, DJ to hit the scene during the last 10 years. He’s risen quickly from DJing basement jams and college parties to hosting the ill I Am mixtapes series.

In ’06 he was nominated for five Justo’s Mixtape Awards, winning the Rookie of the Year award. Superstar Jay’s balances the tunes of today’s best mainstream artists with the hottest rhymes from up-and-coming artists like Clap Cognac and Nicki Minaj.

Most recently, the DJ has inked a deal across the pond with Urban World Wireless and Bang Radio to bring “New York swag” to the UK’s BANG Radio 103.6 FM. There is much to be excited if you Jay these days.

The DJ had a moment to poly with Hip Hop Ruckus and spoke with us about his DJ upbringing, clout and current happenings. Check it out.

HHR: What’s good Jay? How the game treating you?
Superstar Jay: It’s treating me good – can’t complain at all. At this point of my career I understand it’s the hard work that’s going to get me ahead all the time. I got a lot of thins going on from everywhere – it’s getting crazy for me.

HHR: Tell the people how you got your start as DJ Superstar Jay.
SJ: Well I was always DJing. I started at the age of 12 doing basement parties, doing tapes for my friends around the neighborhood. Then in high school I started following Clue around and putting my tapes out but was really playing basketball, so when I felt college basketball wasn’t really doing it for me as a career I started DJing college radio and doing parties. I got big on that end and just felt I needed to be in New York and got big there off mixtapes.

HHR: Now, since that time you’ve had a meteoric rise in New York’s Hip-Hop; being nominated for a record five Justo’s Mixtape Awards in ‘06, and winning the “Rookie of the Year” award in the same year. What’s been the driving force behind your rapid ascension?
SJ: Just being focused on hot music, knowing what’s hot, who’s hot, and who’s not [laughs] – and just taking my career as if I first started doing this.

HHR: SOHH.com dubbed you “a legend in the making” on their Mixtape Report. Do you feel any added pressure to continue being among the most recognizable up-and-coming DJs in the game?
SJ: Yes, I feel like I am a legend in the making. I accomplished so many things in so little time – MTV Awards, etcetera but I carry myself like I haven’t won anything, that’s the difference between me and a lot of other DJs.

HHR: You’ve worked with major player in the game such as G-Unit, Jim Jones, Busta Rhymes, etcetera, but also with independent and unsigned artists. What is more significant to you as a DJ – dropping the hottest exclusive from mainstream artists or helping break new developing artists?
SJ: I feel I tell the real. I have an ear for music. For example, I knew Nicki Minaj was hot before, but the public wouldn’t accept her. I keep it real with all the artist I deal with; if it’s not your time, don’t force it, it will come to you. Even dealing with bigger artists if you got the skills to do it again in music, you have to support the streets and let them know you are here.

HHR: You recently finalized a deal with Urban World Wireless and Bang Radio to bring “New York swag” to the UK’s BANG Radio 103.6 FM. Can you tell us more about the collaboration?
SJ: Well my people Mike Johns and Gilat put that together for me. I always wanted to do a mainstream radio show out of America but it had to be just right, and they decided to let me play what I want to play. I have my own creative control on what’s going on so I’m very happy about this chance.

HHR: Do you have any other projects coming up?
SJ: Yes the radio show, a few big mixtape with some big artists. I’m also working with some major artists on the com up: Clap Cognac, Storm P and Topofdalyne.

HHR: Where can the people find you?
SJ: On Twitter.com/DJSuperstarJay, Myspace.com/DJSuperstarJay or call me at 347.581.8152.

HHR: Any last words?
SJ: Work hard because me and my team are working harder [laughs].
