At this point any person who hasn’t heard of DJ Blazita please come out from within the cave you’ve been living in. From rocking out clubs and other special events to helping unsigned and underground artists establish a buzz in the game, Blazita established herself as on of the most dynamic and respected DJs in Hip-Hop.
She started out as a radio personality at her high school’s radio station and during her college days quickly garnered recognition for rocking out jams at America’s “#1 party school,” Penn State University. Hosted freestyle battles, interviewed special guests and spinning mix shows shortly followed.
Since then Blazita has been featured hosting radio mix shows on Sirius Satellite’s Hip Hop Nation and Shade 45 as well as New York City’s 91.9FM. Last year he was recognized as the “Best Female DJ” at the Justo Awards for her mixtapes. Her R&B mixtape series, Sex & the City: R&B Classics, also received two nominations at this year’s Southern Entertainment Awards. It’s pretty safe to say that Blazita has arrived.
Hip Hop Ruckus recently had an opportunity to parlé with the DJ and talk about her favorite places to spin, earning respect the respect of her peers, her R&B series and also her Block Party radio show on AListRadio.net. Blazita was also hooked us with an exclusive treat – her new Sexy & the City 5 mixtape.
HHR: What’s going on Blazita, how’s everything going?
DJ Blazita: Good, staying busy.
HHR: You are one of the hottest DJs on the rise right now – your buzz is serious. Can you quickly let Hip Hop Ruckus readers know how you rose through the ranks?
DJ Blazita: Thank you for the compliment but I’m still working. Where I am now is mostly from being consistent, using the skills I have and just continuing to improve on them. I’ve also taken time to network and have worked with a lot of talented people. I just stay moving forward no matter what and build on every aspect of DJing – mixtapes, clubs, radio. It also helps that I’m a female, because when all else fails I like using that to my advantage (laughs).
HHR: Now your critically acclaimed mixtape series “Sex and the City: R&B Classics” was nominated for “Best Blend” and “Best Slow Jam” mix at the 2009 Southern Entertainment Awards. What was the experience was like?
DJ Blazita: That was great for me because as a DJ out of New York we usually don’t get nominated at the SEAs. The nominations showed me that people all over the country are listening to my mixes.
HHR: This wasn’t the first time you’ve been nominated for an entertainment award. In fact, you won a Justo Award for “Best Female DJ” last year. How did it feel to be honored by your peers as well as industry suits?
DJ Blazita: It was definitely an honor and I was happy to be recognized for my mixtape projects especially out of all the really talented females in the game. It was one of my many goals so to achieve that after only 2 years of really presenting mixtapes felt great.
HHR: Aside from hosting mixtapes, you have been a featured host Sirius Satellite’s Hip Hop Nation, Shade 45 as well as 91.9FM in New York City. Now you have your own mix show on AListRadio.net dubbed “Block Party.” What’s the format like?
DJ Blazita: Yeah, we’re on every Saturday from 5-10pm holding it down for the Block Party show! It’s a lot of fun and basically we play for the block (laughs) so you might hear street joints, club joints, house, 90s, basically everything but we keep it hype. And of course we have a great venue on AlistRadio.net because the hottest DJs in the world are down with it and we stream live thru video – it’s not a pre-recording so you can interact with us live. I’m aiming for another show on there too where I can connect on-air with artists so we’ll see.
HHR: You DJ throughout the county, I’d like to know what are some of your favorite cities or venues to spin at? Why so?
DJ Blazita: I like traveling to spin because it’s always an experience getting to see what music different cities are feeling and what they know about me as a DJ and how they hear about me. I DJ in a lot of larger venues with 1000 to 1500 people, but my favorite scene is the sexy upscale laid back setting where I can spin soulful music and real hip hop.
HHR: What is DJ Blazita’s greatest aspiration in Hip-Hop and your career?
DJ Blazita: I have a lot of immediate goals like to DJ on FM radio, to breaking a few artists and working with some larger scale mixtape projects. My thing right now is to just become the most powerful, female DJ to ever do this where all men have to look to me for what’s hot you know kinda like a female Funk Flex (laughs).
HHR: What else does Blazita have coming up in ‘09?
DJ Blazita: Real soon you will all be witnessing the Vynl Destination movement, which includes crazy hot production and the very talented MC/producer Daath Nix. I’m looking forward to being a part of that this summer because their music is really going to make a huge impact on the world. I’ve also got some mixtape projects coming out with Ruff Ryders’ new artists and D-Block as well as just continuing to put out my New York street series.
HHR: Where can we find you on the Net?
DJ Blazita: You can find me at myspace.com/blazita or follow me on twitter.com/djblazita. I’m also on facebook or google me if you want to download one of my mixtapes.
HHR: Any last words?
DJ Blazita: Shout out to my Gutta Muzic family– M Reck and Doggie Diamonds of ForbezDVD.com for being the realest and rocking with me thru everything. Shout out to Evil Empire, The Commission, and all the blogs and sites who show support.
