Dirt NastyHere’s a change of pace for all you self-proclaimed Hip-Hop aficionados who can appreciate a curveball. Lewd, crude and definitely hilarious, Dirt Nasty is not your boom bap rapper. Known on the catwalk and in Hollywood circles by his government, Simon Rex, the former MTV video jock is hella-busy.

Dirt recently dropped a mixtape with his crew of jokers, Dyslexic Speedreaders (with Andre Legacy, Mickey Avalon and Beardo) which was cosigned by the likes of Lil Jon, Kimbo Slice and knucklehead Ron Artest. Aside from working with Lil Jon, he’s been in the lab with Too Short and Alchemist. He is also set to appear in three upcoming films – now that’s grindin’.

Dirt took some time out of his busy schedule to chop it up with Hip Hop Ruckus and talk about his rap style, crew and mixtape. He also spoke about his role in “American Carroll” and “Hotel California” as well as the indie flick “The Truth about Angels.” So adjust your specks and read up.

YaBoyJavi: Dirt what’s going on?
Dirt Nasty: I’m just working on my next album right now – trying to write funny lyrics over all the beats I got sitting here. Also been editing tour footage I have from the last four years of traveling the globe. Shits classic!

YaBoy: Sounds good, before we go any further please tell us how you get the name Dirt Nasty? It sounds like a name straight out of an adult flick.
DN: My boy Ethan Browne called me years ago when we lived in New York and asked what I’m doing and I said, “Just chillin’ on the couch, dirt nasty, meaning being scummy and lazy.” He said, “That should be your nickname.”

YaBoy: Scummy and lazy, sounds like some cats I grew up with [laugh]. You and your crew, the Dyslexic Speedreaders, recently dropped a free downloadable mixtape featuring drops and has been consigned by artists and celebrities like DJ AM, Travis Barker, Lil’ Jon, Paris Hilton, Kimbo Slice and Ron Artest among others. What kind of feedback has it been received by fans?
DN : Our fans are loving the mixtape. It’s all the music we never released because it’s got so many samples and we didn’t want the music to just sit there so we had all these celebs we know do drops and we give it away for free. It’s available on myspace.com/dirtnasty just click the banner on top of the page and enjoy.

YaBoy : Do you have a single out right now?
DN: My single right now is “1980” which is my club banger that Cisco Adler produced. It’s on some electro rock shit. That’s the sound right now. People want to dance and party. There’s a fucking war and a recession going on. People want to get loose. That’s why I’m here, to save the world. It’s got over a million views on YouTube – it’s a platinum video damn it.

YaBoy: No doubt – tell em. For those who may not be familiar with Dirt Nasty or the Dyslexic Speedreaders, you fellas have a lewd and satirical style. Can you explain how the style?
DN: Our style is comedic but we take it serious if that makes sense. I do standup comedy and it’s all about timing so it’s got to be in the pocket and punch lines got to be clear. I like to talk shit that no rappers would say, like about trannies or baby dicks or having sex with animals, you know? Wholesome family shit. Also we like to rap to girls; most rappers seem like they’re talking to other dudes – that don’t make sense to me.

Dirt NastyYaBoy: [Laughs] you might have a point. Now before people knew you as Dirt Nasty you were introduced to television audiences in the 90s as Simon Rex on MTV. How did your alter ego, Dirt Nasty, take shape
DN: I started as a producer making beats in my spare time. But growing up I always would freestyle with my homies and make tapes on my boy’s karaoke machine for fun. When I met Mickey Avalon and Andre Legacy I made beats for them, then one day in the studio I grabbed the mic and had them on the floor cracking up. They asked me to rap with them and the rest is history.

YaBoy: I hear ya. Not only have you had success in music and acting but you initially were a successful model for clothing lines such as Tommy Hilfiger, Levi’s and Calvin Klein. Which of the three is more demanding of you?
DN: I’d say acting is the most demanding because you have to study and memorize lines all the time and go to auditions on the regular. There’s a lot of rejection in Hollywood so you need a strong suit of armor or you’ll go bonkers. That’s why music is so dope because it’s more creative. I just like making people laugh in any format.

YaBoy: Talking about acting, I know you have rolls in three upcoming movies. What projects are you currently working on?
DN
: I just did a lead roll in a gangster shoot ‘em up movie called “Hotel California” where I play a drug dealer who’s quick to blast off some rounds. I usually do comedy so it was fun playing that character. I did another lead roll in an indie film called “The Truth about Angels” where I play a successful actor whose friend rapes a girl at a party and I get in way over my head. And I’m in “American Carroll,” a comedy about Michael Moore – spoofing his flicks. It’s with David Zucker, the same director who I did “Scary Movie 3” and “Scary Movie 4” with. He also did “Airplane” and “Naked Gun.” I love working with him, he’s the best in the biz.

YaBoy: Any last words?
DN
: Yeah, I just want to thank all my homies from the Bay and LA and NYC for giving me my swagger and thank all my fans for bumpin’ my shit. I’ll keep making ya’ll laugh as long as I can. I want to thank my Dyslexic crew: Mickey Avalon, Andre Legacy, and Beardo.

I’ve been working with Too Short, Lil Jon, Alchemist, Evidence, Living Legends – all these talented motherfuckers. I’m a lucky ass cracker.
