Songbook/ Atlantic Recording Artist Trey Songz brings Songz for Peace, a response to the rise in youth violence, to Richmond, Virginia October 13, 2008. The event, to occur at Thomas Jefferson High School, follows a tribute to Trey Songz, the musician and philanthropist, October 12, at the Virginia Icon. Hosted by the Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center, the Virginia Icon is a vocal music competition that draws middle and high school students from throughout Virginia. Virginia Icon proceeds support PEATC’s efforts to build parent-school-community partnerships that offer better futures for Virginia’s 1.2 million students.
Honoring Trey at the Virginia Icon draws attention to the efforts he and fellow philanthropist, Noonie G. Ward are undertaking to make a difference in the lives of Chicago youth through Songz for Peace, piloted in the Windy City this past summer. With the Chicago crime rate rising, Trey & Noonie felt the need to step in and hold an informative panel discussion addressing the concerns of Chicago teens. The event occurred at Lindblom High School on Chicago’s Southside where over five hundred children received useful information, gift bags, containing school supplies, and a special performance from Trey Songz and well-known local artists.
PEATC’s Richmond office, the Parent Information Resource Center, is teaming with Richmond Public Schools to bring Songz for Peace to Thomas Jefferson High School where close to 300 youth from eight Richmond schools will hear a panel discussion featuring Trey, Noonie, Yasmin Shiraz, a nationally-recognized author of books pertinent to youth, and others concerned with youth issues. Students will also showcase their artistic talents through vocal, dance, and poetic presentations.
Songz for Peace seeks sponsorships and donations for gift bags to distribute to the children.
