"Review of Dame Grease’s ‘Goon Music’" by The Beast (Audio)

Posted on Wednesday, April 16, 2008

As one of the hottest albums to grace the shelves at retail stores and personal CD players in the ‘90s, “It’s Dark and Hell is Hot” was DMX’s debut album on DefJam Records in 1998. That album reins as one of the toughest albums that music producer Dame Grease put his mark on. As the primary producer of that album, with other credits going to Irv Gotti, P.K., Lil Rob and Swizz Beatz, tracks like “Fuckin’ Wit D,” “Look Thru My Eyes” and “Stop Being Greedy” aired a brass feel for the album that instinctively made Hip-Hop patrons stand up and growl. “It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot” went 4x platinum and Dame gained serious notoriety for his skills and it essentially translated into other artists wanting to work with the multi-platinum selling producer. He’s worked with Nas, The Lox, Freeway, T.I., Jay-Z, N.O.R.E, Beanie Sigel, Fat Joe, Mary J. Blige, Kelis and mad more. On the strength of his work with artists and skills in the studio, he also did the film score for “Exit Wounds” and “Cradle 2 The Grave.”

When his name was buzzing loud in ‘90s, the Yonkers native was being recruited to apart of in-house production teams at Bad Boy (The Hitmen) and Roca-a-fella Records, but he choose to stay independent and created his own company called Vacant Lot Records instead. One of the notables from Vacant Lot includes “The Best of Dame Grease Instrumentals.” Now he’s is dropping something to ride to in the streets for this summer. His new album called “Goon Musik” is being released through Vacant Lot Records/BabyGrande. You’ll find that tracks “Coke Talk” and “Sometimes” showcases the albums block appeal while less solid tracks like Lotzilla looses’ focus a bit but true Dame fans will still get a taste of why he’s a coveted producer. The 13 track street heater comes out May 27th and features Lot Block associates Meeno, T6, Lenox Ave Boys and Max B. – The Beast
