"Best and Worst of 2008 NBA" by The Beast
Posted on Friday, February 22, 2008
There was a lot of expectation coming forth about this years NBA All-Star weekend. The magnitude of its position in regards to New Orleans was huge. The NBA spent large portions of it’s time to push the fact that they have taking on a huge part of the revitalization efforts of New Orleans. Most of that could be seen during every opportunity that they got for promo and commercial time. After awhile the commercials and discussions just seemed over exposed, but you still gotta give props to the NBA because they seem to be the unmistakable hero in helping the rebuild the city. You don’t see or hear too much about the NFL or MLB. The MLB doesn’t have a team there, but so what, you have fans. Despite my barking about the support of the city, my aim in this thinking piece is to reflect on the top 8 “best and worst” moments of the 2008 All-Star weekend.
The Highs:
8. Mike Bibby being traded during the break. I think he’s going to a better team with crazy potential. He’ll also be playing ball in ATL.
7. J Kidd being cool under pressure with having constant questions about the trade issues being thrown in his face.
6. Family Guy showing a new episode during the All-Star game. I couldn’t believe it, maybe I’m wrong about it being new, but FOX got galls for even showing an episode. I thought they would have shown Spider Man for the 1 billionth time.
5. NBA All-Stars helping to build homes and paint schools during the weekend.
4. Boobie Gibson breaking the all-time three point attempts record during the Rookie/Sophomore Challenge.
3. The East blowing out the West.
2. Dwight Howard winning the Slam Dunk contest. I had high hopes for Rudy Gay though. Rudy is nasty and is an emerging star.
1. The TNT commenting staff: Charles Barkley, Kenny Smith, EJ and Magic Johnson. These guys were funny and you couldn’t turn the channel or go to the bathroom because you would be too afraid to miss what crazy moment or joke they had lined up. It seemed like the commercials ran short during their two hour special Saturday right.
The Lows:
8. Poor camera angles by TNT during the game. There were a few times when I thought TNT didn’t use better judgment in showing a dunk highlight. One such moment was during one of Lebron’s first dunks which was an alley-op. TNT used the terrible ceiling view instead of a floor angle. The ceiling camera is the camera view that zips up and down on a wire and is not my ideal view for showcasing a ground to air view of a dunk taking off.
7. Dwayne Wade being in the All-Star game. I know he has a following in south Florida and is popular with youth because of his funny T-Mobile commercials with Charles Barkley, but his team has one of the worst records, he’s a leader in turnover’s and never has a pair of hot kicks on. If people ever start calling him overrated I would be surprised.
6. The music. I know the theme was Mardi Gras and New Orleans, but did every music guest have to be from New Orleans and play shit that a hip crowd couldn’t relate too. I saw Ludacris in the audience… they should have asked him to come up.
5. TNT’s Mardi Gras twins. What the hell where they thinking showing that, it was confusing.
4. The ugly NBA All-Star jerseys. They were hideous and a long fall from last year’s jerseys in Vegas.
3. The celebrity basketball game. This just needs to end now because it’s getting embarrassing.
2. Cheryl Miller getting every body’s name wrong during the multiple receptions and making Gerald Green and D. Howard stand in the middle of the floor during judging to ask ridiculous questions. That was terrible
1. Kobe being hurt and only playing for three minutes.
